Introduction to Public Speaking

with Debbie Wahle

Are you afraid of speaking in public? If so, you are in good company.

Statistically speaking, 3 out of every 4 people fear public speaking; speech anxiety is so common that there is a formal term for it –glossophobia.

The average person ranks the fear of public speaking higher than the fear of death!

It is likely that all of us will one day have to speak in public. Whether we are giving a formal presentation to an audience, providing training or presenting to our peers or speaking publicly to family and friends.

The fear of public speaking is very real. However, there are techniques to help you overcome your fears. There are even ways to help harness your energy in a positive way.

  • The course will enable you to acquire skills to speak in front of a group with ease and presence
  • This course will help you develop coping methods to make public speaking a lot easier
  • The group size will be no more than 8-10 people, so there is plenty of individual attention given.

Over the 8 weeks, we are going to work together in a safe and enjoyable environment to explore public speaking. The dynamics of a small group will enable trust to be built up quickly and for students to support and work with each other.

The course will enable you to take small steps and practice with elements of humour and fun and you will see that you are not alone in being wary about talking to a group, small or large. We will in a relaxed way use practical exercises to develop these skills; we will explore some of the techniques which help produce an authentic and confident way of speaking to enable you to connect with your audience, large or small.

The course is for everyone, it will assist those who are new to public speaking, those who are worried about public speaking, and those who wish to develop useful skills for their professional and social lives.

We will look at what makes a good speaker and who we aspire to be as a public speaker.
