Introduction to Illustration & Creative Drawing

with Kyle Baddeley-Read

This is a relaxed, practical course and would be ideal if you have interest in drawing and creative practice in general. Prior drawing experience is not necessary but you should be willing to draw and to share your drawings with others. Early sessions will include a number of practical activities that will help you find your own individual illustrative style. Other activities will stimulate creativity and help you find your own unique sources of inspiration.

You should bring along an A4 sketchbook (larger if you prefer) and any drawing materials you think you might like to use.

Week 1 – Finding the courage to draw: simple but effective drawing techniques for creating effective imagery.

Week 2 – Pictures and words; how images can be combined with the written word to create meaning.

Week 3 – Creative mindmapping, letting your imagination run wild.

Week 4 – Drafting and Re-drafting; the importance of developing a picture through several stages.

Week 5 – Telling a story in pictures; creation of a simple comic strip narrative.

Week 6 and 7 – Meeting a brief; working towards prompts from literature.

Week 8 – Beating creative blocks; keeping yourself creative when you feel stuck.
